NCFE Level 1 Award in Music Technology (Qualification course)

This course is for 16+ candidates who are absolute beginners and are interested in the recording, production and engineering of music and sound. Candidates will learn to develop and practice their skills using a variety of sound equipment and DAW software. Explored skills are basic recording studio operations (live studio sessions), the use of loop sequencing software, and an introduction to audio and MIDI editing techniques.

Who is this course for?

This course is an entry-level precursor and prepares learners for the full Level 2 Music Technology qualification. More able learners can also do the parallel Level 2 course if desired.

What will I learn?

This will include course objectives.

  1. Use Midi sequencing and software

  2. Use Midi & Audio techniques

  3. How to use computerized file location, file saving and backup procedures

  4. Record and mix down a combination of MIDI and AUDIO materials

  5. How to build a portfolio of evidence to show development of your work.

How will I learn?

The aim of the course is to build a portfolio of theory and practical evidence. Much of the work is completed within the sessions through the use of hardware equipment and production software such as Logic Pro X & Ableton Live. There are also a series of worksheets to complete with tasks to demonstrate your theory awareness. The ability to practice production and sequencing at home would also be an advantage but is not essential.

What equipment do I use on the course?

The Centre has a good range of Music Technology equipment, this includes the latest  iMac computers with Logic Pro X & Ableton Live software installed as well as some 3rd party software. There are MIDI Controller keyboards plus some recording and mixing equipment (Microphones / Mixing desks). Alongside our own equipment the tutor will make use of recording studio time in his own Black & Gold 42 track digital recording studio.
